Connecting People With Their Irish Roots

Book Launch

On behalf of author John Crotty, publishers The History Press and Hodges Figgis bookstore, I am delighted to invite you to join us on Monday 16 March at 6pm in Hodges Figgis, 56-58 Dawson Street at 6pm for a launch and talk on:

‘The Irish Tricolour – The Truth behind the Symbols and Struggles that defined a Nation’ –

In a short talk and presentation, historian John Crotty will reveal ground-breaking new research that has placed Dublin at the heart of the Tricolour story. Believed to have originated in 1848, this new history shows the Tricolour was first fused by a forgotten female patriot, emerging September to December 1830 in Dublin City, 18 years earlier than previously understood.

Emilia Hamilton of Annadale, Fairview, Dublin gave the symbol its design and meaning in a Tricolour cockade, before first flights took place at Howth Pier and a first flight over a building at Dunsoghly Towerhouse, Saint Margarets, Dublin. These new findings will reshape how Dublin interprets its history and visitor journey.

In addition, author John Crotty will relay the most up to date understanding of Ireland’s treasured symbols ahead of Saint Patrick’s day – the Harp, Shamrock, Green for Ireland and more

Joining the author will be former Visiting Fellow, Trinity College Dublin, Sylvie Kleinman, giving a rich insight into Irish – French links 1798 – 1848.

6pm start – Wine on arrival – 6.15 talk – 7pm Q&A – Close – All welcome

Of high interest to those working in or enjoying history, join us and discover the latest chapter, and newest character, in Dublin and Ireland’s rich history. Free to all.
