Christmas Opening Times

The following archives and institutions are advertising their opening hours over the Christmas period.

National Library of Ireland

All NLI locations will be closed on the following dates:

  • 24 December
  • 25 December
  • 26 December
  • 1 January 2026

Reading Rooms & Readers Ticket Office:

  • Closing at 5pm, Tuesday 23 December
  • Re-opening at 9.30am, Friday 2 January 2026

National Archives

We are closed on public holidays as well as the following dates:

  • Wednesday 24 December closure at 12 noon
  • Thursday 25 December to Wednesday 31 December

General Register Office (GRO)

This office will close for walk ins on Tuesday 16 December and will reopen on Tuesday 6 January, 2026. You can continue to contact the office by email: GROResearchRoom@welfare.ie.

Public Record Office of Northern Ireland (PRONI)

Closed on these public holidays:

  • Wednesday 24 December
  • Thursday 25 December
  • Friday 26 December

General Register Office NI (GRONI)

The GRONI Public Search Room is open from 9.30 am until 4.00 pm, Monday to Friday (excluding public, bank and all Northern Ireland government holidays).
