Exactly one hundred years ago, work was advanced on the first major project in the Irish Free State – the development of an electrical generation and distribution system by the German firm Siemens-Schuckert for the citizens of our new independent state. This presentation will describe the brave decisions taken which placed the Deansgrange area as the centre for distributing electrical energy from the Shannon Hydro Scheme since 24th October 1929 to homes and businesses in South County Dublin, which we still benefit from and enjoy today. The connections with the local community and ESB grew over the decades, as the Clonkeen area developed, including promotion of electrical appliances and “electric homes”.
