Connecting People With Their Irish Roots

Free History Magazine

The October edition of the online history magazine, 200, takes us back to the autumn of 1822, reporting the news then but in the language of 2022. There’s coverage of the deciphering of the Rosetta Stone, an astonishing attack on the UK’s dead foreign secretary, Lord Castlereagh, by the poet Lord Byron, and the death of the sculptor of the Three Graces, Antonio Canova. In Ireland, there’s a resumption of violent attacks by Ribbonmen and Rockites after the easing of food shortages and disease, and the start of a visit to the famine-hit areas by the social reformer Robert Owen.
